Numbers Numbers

We've had a lot of people email asking how much money we spent over a half a year of travel and how in the world we planned our budget. Luckily, Yuriy is pretty crazy about numbers and he kept track of all of our expenses on a daily basis. 

We crunched some numbers and created a visual record of money we spent, places we traveled, how we got around, how many Nutella crepes we consumed, how many photos we took, and other fun facts during our 6 months abroad.  Enjoy!

    Thanks for sharing this! I can't even imagine trying to get through almost 45,000 photos. I'm just finishing up with the 900-some photos from our trip LAST year!

    I love graphics like this. I'm impressed that you only spent $25,000 in six months! When I went to Europe by myself for three weeks I think I spent almost $10,000! haha Clearly I need lessons in budget travel.

      Briel - Haha! We were a little surprised ourselves! If we stayed in Europe the entire time, we would have spent double that, no doubt.

      It is a lot, but not when you consider how long we were gone. We were traveling for half a year and that's the total for two people. I think it's about what we would spend at home in half a year when you factor in mortgage, gas, groceries, etc.

    This is great, thanks! I have been following this blog in preperaton of my own trip tot asia and australia; I was just wondering if you will put up graph of money spent in each country? It is so difficult to budget for a lot of countries at the same time... Thanks for these though!

      Anonymous - Sorry, I don't plan on making another graph... what country you travel to does make a huge difference in budgeting. Europe and Australia were much more expensive, which is why we spent about half our time in Asia. :)

      Ophelia - We shared most of our books. A couple came with us from home, but most of them we picked up at hostels/used book shops. Off the top of my head, I/we read A Year in the World by Frances Mayes, parts of Religious by Mark Driscoll, Open by Andre Agassi, Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser, and The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman...

    I love your photos! My fiance and I are planning a similar six month trip for our honeymoon next year. I was wondering what sort of planet tickets you bought - did you get round-the-world tickets or did you buy them all individually?

      Thank you! We just bought our tickets along the way. We did the whole trip on the fly so we weren't sure where we were going to be or when, so we figured this way would be easier for us, maybe.

    Julia! I remember previously reading somewhere that you were able to fund most of your "6 month honeymoon" through friends & family for your wedding gift. Did you use a website to do this so that they would be able to see where the $ was going/towards what is was going to? For example: $50 for a couples massage in Thailand. I swear I remember reading something along those lines somewhere... just can't seem to find where. Thank you!

      Hi Monique, we set ours up using the proofing feature of our photography website (not what it was meant for), but there are easier/better ways to do it now.
